![]() The lyrics just seem so on the nose and obvious to me. Can anyone help me at all?!! I understand thematically its super deep to some people, but I think we can all relate to the dark themes in some way. Obviously each to their own, and if it is someone's favourite then I can't take that away from them. I'm genuinely surprised at the amount of people who rate it as their favourite. I must have listened to EOS back to back about 30 times and I enjoy it less each time. I love all of their other albums dearly, but I cannot for the life of me get into it. Sultans Curse, Jaguar God, Andromeda, and Scorpion Breath are great tunes, but the rest feel like b-sides to my ears. It has a few great tracks, but as a whole it just doesn't have the Mastodon magic for me. I'm not sure what I'm missing, but I just really don't rate Emperor of Sand at all. Excited to hear this new song and see what direction they take next. Of course I've been wondering that since Crack the Skye, and Mastodon has yet to disappoint me. I just have no idea how they're going to follow it up honestly. I loved it at the first listen, but I didn't expect it to last this long because of how polished and accessible it was right up front. I can more easily listen to the entire album in one sitting, and things don't get old so fast. And maybe that's why it lasts longer for me. With Emperor of Sand, they broke just enough ground, taking risks with a few weird ones like Clandestiny and Show Yourself (good risks in my opinion) and giving the album some of the variety that OMRTS lacked. OMRTS tried to capitalize on the new ideas of the Hunter while dialing back the zaniness a bit. ![]() A good experiment, a catchy experiment, but most importantly, it was a breaking of new ground. The Hunter was just one giant experiment. I think they just hit the sweet spot with it. I've listened to the songs more often and for longer since their release than the previous two albums. I love the Hunter and Once More Round the Sun, but I've also found that Emperor of Sand has had a longer shelf-life for me.
