This exquisitely crafted drama probes the idealized, often false constructions of cultural and maternal identities wrought by the adoptees return. And relevant to every piece of real estate on Earth. SUBROSA traces a young womans journey to Korea, the land of her birth, to find the mother shes never known. This may sound like a one-note project, and maybe it is. It's an H&M now, but through voice-over, we learn that years ago, it's where a Jewish family was yanked from their living room and sent to an extermination camp. McQueen shoots each chapter, the sheer number of which crushes the viewer like an avalanche in a hypnotizing fashion. This maximalist four-hour-and-twenty-three-minute marathon (including a gorgeous intermission that is actually worth sitting through) visualizes Stinger's remarkable book of the same name that moved block by block through the Dutch capitol detailing the horrors that happened at each location during World War II. Director Steve McQueen ( 12 Years a Slave, Small Axe) has been living in Amsterdam for some years with his wife, filmmaker and author Bianca Stitger. There's never been a movie like Occupied City. The episode is notorious among fans for being one of the worst, if not the worst, of the show’s seven-year run. May as well get it out of the way and say that Killers of the Flower Moon, which may very well end up winning the Oscar for Best Picture, didn't make the cut. Streaming is a terrific way to catch up on things or revisit classics. ![]() If there is one overriding theme to my list of the best 21 films of 2023, it's that I saw 19 of them in theaters or screening rooms. Yes, there are a tremendous amount of rotten ones, but if you do a smidgen of independent research beyond the marketing, you will find hours and hours of outstanding entertainment coming at you every month. It drives me crazy when I hear someone say there aren't any good movies anymore.
